The Ultimate Guide to Leasing a Used Electric Car

Leasing a used Electric Vehicle (EV) is now a good way to drive a modern car while keeping your monthly costs low.

So much so that in 2026, the UK market for "second-life" electric cars had grown by over 40% compared to previous years.

This is because many high-quality EVs from the 2022–2023 "boom" are now returning to the market as affordable used leases.

So much so that in this guide, we will explain everything you need to know about battery health, charging costs, and how to find the best used EV for your budget.

Tesla 3 Performance

How Much Can You Save by Leasing a Used EV?

The biggest advantage of a used lease is value. A new electric car typically loses about 40% to 50% of its value in the first three years.

When you lease a used EV - as above - that initial "depreciation hit" has already happened.

The Financial Benefit

For instance, on average, a used lease for a Tesla Model 3 or a Kia Niro EV can be £150 to £200 cheaper per month than leasing the brand-new equivalent.

Then, because EVs have fewer moving parts than petrol cars (around 20 vs 2,000), a three-year-old electric car often drives exactly like a new one does - giving you the best of both worlds.

Understanding Battery Health and Range

The most common question we hear is: "Will the battery still be good?"

In 2026, data from hundreds of thousands of UK electric cars shows that EV batteries are much tougher than people first thought, and in fact, each used EV will even have its own certified State of Health (SoH) certificates. Here, this is a certified check that confirms the battery’s current capacity compared to when it was brand new, which will usually be shown as a percentage of health (e.g., 95% SoH).

For example, most lithium-ion batteries only lose about 1% to 2% of their capacity per year.

FleetSauce Pro Tip: Remember, for daily driving, most owners charge to 80% to keep that SoH high, using the full 100% only for long trips.

But what do the key stats say?

Key Statistics

  • Degradation - A 2023 EV with 30,000 miles will likely still have 96% to 98% of its original battery health.

  • Warranty - Most manufacturers (like Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan) provide an 8-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.

So, when you lease a 3-year-old car, you are still covered by the manufacturer for another 5 years.

SoH Certificates, What Are They when it Comes to Used EVs?

A State of Health (SoH) certificate is a certified diagnostic report that measures an electric vehicle battery's current energy capacity relative to its original factory condition.

Expressed as a percentage, it provides a definitive metric for range capability and asset value, with most 2026 used EV leases showing 94% to 98% health after 30,000 miles.

Real-World Range vs WLTP

When looking at used stock, remember that the "WLTP" range is a laboratory test.

As a result, one thing to bear in mind is that WLTP can actually change over the year as the climate gets warmer and colder.

Summer Range

Expect 90% of the official figure.

Winter Range

Here, cold weather can reduce range by 15-20% because the car uses energy to heat the cabin.

FleetSauce Pro Tip

You want to look for used models with a Heat Pump (common on higher-trim Kia and Hyundai models) as this saves battery life in British winters, as here the colder winter can actually affect your battery, whereas if you have a heatpump fitted this helps to combat the cold here.

Charging a Used EV, What Do You Need to Know?

One of the largest advancements over the last several years is in charging technology, which has stabilised from the early days, so a used EV from 2022 or 2023 will still work perfectly well with modern chargers.

Home Charging a Used Ev

When it comes to charging, if you have a driveway, a 7kW home charger is the cheapest way to "refuel."

Cost

Charging overnight on a dedicated EV energy tariff (is approx. 7p-9p per kWh), and it can cost as little as £5 for a full charge.

Speed of charge

A full charge for a 64kWh battery (like a Hyundai Kona Electric lease for instance) takes about 9 hours - which is perfect for overnight charging.

Public Rapid Charging used EVs

If you go on long trips, though, most used EVs will still be able to use DC Rapid Chargers, which you will find at service stations and petrol stations up and down the country.

Here you can expect:

Standard Speed

Most used EVs support 50kW charging, which adds 80 miles in about 30–40 minutes.

Premium Speed

Look for used Hyundai Ioniq 5 leases or even Tesla leases if you want "Ultra-Rapid" charging (150kW+), which can charge the car in under 20 minutes.

The Current Charging Network, Reliability is the New Standard

If you haven't looked at a charging map since 2023, the landscape has changed completely.

Here, the UK public charging network exceeded 118,000 points by March 2026, representing a 19% year-on-year growth. The expansion focused heavily on "Ultra-Rapid" 150kW+ hubs, ensuring that used EVs with modern CCS connectors can recover 80 miles of range in approximately 20–30 minutes at most motorway service stations.

  • 118,000+ Public Chargers - The network has grown by over 19% in the last 12 months alone.
  • Ultra-Rapid Focus - There are now over 10,000 "Ultra-Rapid" (150kW+) chargers in the UK - a 40% increase since early 2025.
  • En-Route Confidence - High-power charging hubs are now a standard feature at almost every major UK motorway service station.

As a result, for a used EV leaser, this means that even older models with slightly smaller batteries are now more "long-trip capable" because you are never more than a few miles from a reliable, high-speed top-up.

Maintenance and MOTs

One of the best things about leasing a used electric car is the low maintenance, as used electric cars offer approximately 40% lower maintenance costs than internal combustion vehicles. This reduction is attributed to the absence of high-wear components such as timing belts, spark plugs, and oil systems, alongside regenerative braking technology, which significantly extends the service life of brake pads and discs.

This is so for a number of reasons, including, for instance:

Brakes

Because EVs use "regenerative braking" (the motor slows the car down), brake pads can last twice as long as petrol cars.

Servicing

An EV service usually only involves checking the tyres, cabin filters, and brake fluid.

There are no oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts to worry about.

The MOT

Every used lease car over three years old must have an MOT.

At Fleetsauce, we make sure all our used stock has a fresh MOT and a full service history before it reaches you.

Taxes and Savings for 2026

The UK government has updated the rules for 2026, but electric cars still offer big savings over all other forms of transport you can buy.

Including, for instance:

Benefit in Kind (BiK)

If you are a company car driver, the BiK rate for electric cars is 4% for the 2026/27 tax year.

This is still significantly lower than the 20% to 37% charged for petrol or diesel cars.

Road Tax (VED)

As of 2026, electric vehicles in the UK are subject to a standard annual Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rate of £200. While the previous £0 rate has ended, EVs benefit from a higher "Expensive Car Supplement" threshold of £50,000, allowing premium used electric SUVs to avoid the luxury tax penalty applied to petrol equivalents.

Checklist On How to Choose Your Used Lease

Before you sign your agreement, you always want to check these four points to make sure they are right for you first:

Check your daily mileage

If you drive less than 50 miles a day, a smaller, cheaper battery (like a 40kWh Nissan Leaf lease) will be plenty.

Verify the charging cables

You also want to check that the car comes with a "Type 2" cable for public charging.

Some used cars may also include a "Granny Cable" for 3-pin plug charging at home.

Tyre Condition

EVs are heavier than petrol cars and can wear through tyres faster.

However, here at Fleetsauce, the car you will get will have these inspected, and all tyres will be checked to make sure they have plenty of tread remaining.

Insurance Group

When it comes to your insurance, some powerful EVs (like the Tesla Performance models) are in high insurance groups.

So you want to check your premium before choosing your model, ideally to make sure it sits correctly within your budget.

Looking for a Used Electric Car Salary Sacrifice Deal?

Used electric cars are one of the most tax-efficient cars in the UK for 2026. By choosing an EV Salary Sacrifice scheme through your employer, you can drive a used EV car on lease for significantly less than a personal lease.

As here used, EV salary sacrifice schemes allow employees to pay for a lease using pre-tax income, reducing monthly outgoings by up to 40%. In 2026, this remains the most tax-efficient procurement method due to the 4% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rate, offering significant savings over traditional personal contract hire (PCH).

  • Save up to 40% on monthly costs by paying from your pre-tax salary.
  • Total Peace of Mind with an all-inclusive maintenance, insurance, and breakdown cover.
  • No Deposit Required, just get behind the wheel with zero upfront cost.
  • Ultra-Low Tax as you can get Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates of just 3%–4% for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.

Example: A 40% taxpayer can often save over £2,000 per year compared to a standard PCP or Personal Lease agreement, for instance.

The 2026 EV Tax & Leasing Guide

As we move through 2026 and beyond, the way electric vehicles are taxed in the UK has undergone its most significant shift in a decade. While the days of "£0 Road Tax" are officially behind us, there is a major silver lining for those looking at premium SUVs.

For a lease customer, understanding these exact figures is the key to spotting a genuine bargain on our price list.

Breaking Down the 2026 Road Tax (VED) Costs

It is a clever bit of budgeting to know exactly what the annual bill looks like now that EVs have entered the standard tax system.

So, if you are leasing a LeapMotor B10, you must factor in the standard rate for the remainder of your contract.

  • Standard Annual Rate (Year 2 onwards)£200. This is the flat rate that now applies to almost all cars registered after April 2017, regardless of fuel type.
  • Company Car Tax (BiK) – For the 2026/27 tax year, the Benefit-in-Kind rate for EVs has risen to 4%. While this is a small increase, it still saves a 40% taxpayer thousands of pounds a year compared to a petrol SUV, which can sit as high as 37%.

The "Expensive Car" Victory, The £50,000 Threshold

The biggest win for 2026 and beyond, though, is that there has been an increase in the Expensive Car Supplement threshold (often called the Luxury Tax).

Previously, any car with a list price over £40,000 was hit with an extra £440 annual penalty for five years.

This was catching almost every mid-range electric SUV on the market.

However, as of April 2026, the threshold for electric vehicles has been increased to £50,000.

Which is a brilliant bit of news if you are considering a premium lease - such as an Audi Q4 e-tron lease, a Tesla Model Y lease, or a high-spec BMW i4.

Because these cars now sit below the new £50k limit, they avoid that "luxury penalty" entirely.

For a lease customer, this is often reflected in a lower monthly payment, as the leasing company no longer has to account for that extra £2,200 of tax over a typical 5-year cycle.

It essentially makes a "premium" EV cost much closer to a "standard" one than ever before.

Used EV vs Used Diesel, What Is The Real Cost Comparison

When choosing between a used electric car and a traditional diesel, many drivers only look at the monthly lease price only.

However, to find the true winner, you have to look at the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

As when you factor in fuel, tax, and the massive business tax savings, a used EV often saves you thousands over the course of a lease.

Monthly Savings Comparison (Example)

For instance, below is a typical comparison between two of the UK's most popular used executive cars, a 2023 Tesla Model 3 and a 2023 BMW 3 Series (Diesel).

Cost Factor (Monthly) Used Tesla Model 3 Used BMW 320d (Diesel)
"Fuel" Cost (1,000 miles/mo) £25 - £30
(Off-peak home charging)
£130 - £150
(Average 55mpg)
Company Car Tax (BiK) ~£50
(4% Rate for 2026/27)
~£450+
(Up to 37% Rate)
Road Tax (VED) £200/year
(Standard 2026 Rate)
£200/year
(Standard 2026 Rate)
Total Running Cost £92 per month £596 per month

Why the Gap is So Large?

This is actually due to a number of reasons, including, for example:

The "Fuel" Revolution

Even with the 2026 energy prices, charging a used EV at home still remains significantly cheaper than buying diesel.

For instance, on a dedicated EV tariff, you are paying roughly 3p per mile.

In contrast, even an efficient diesel engine averages 13p to 15p per mile at current pump prices.

The Benefit in Kind (BiK) Advantage

For 2026/27, the BiK rate for a zero-emission used EV is just 4%.

Most used diesel cars fall into the highest brackets (often the maximum 37%) because of their CO2 emissions.

For a high-rate taxpayer, this single difference can save you over £4,000 a year in personal tax.

Maintenance Savings

A used diesel car with 40,000 miles is also approaching expensive "big" services (timing belts, DPF filters, etc.).

A used Tesla or Kia Niro has no such parts, and our data shows that used EV leasers spend roughly 40% less on scheduled maintenance than those in internal combustion vehicles do, for instance as well.

Can I lease a used EV for my business?

Yes, you can, as used EV leasing is very popular for businesses.

You can often reclaim 50% of the VAT on the monthly payments (or 100% if the car is used purely for business).

How long are the lease terms?

We typically offer used leases over 24, 36, or 48 months.

This gives you the flexibility to upgrade your car as battery technology continues to improve.

What happens if the battery fails?

It is extremely rare for an EV battery to fail completely.

However, if the capacity drops below a certain level (usually 70%), it is covered by the manufacturer's 8-year warranty - meaning you are still fully protected if this occurs.

Do I need a special home charger?

While you can charge from a standard 3-pin socket, we do recommend installing a 7kW smart home charger where possible.

This allows you to schedule charging for the middle of the night when electricity is cheapest.

What is a good State of Health (SoH) percentage for a 3-year-old EV?

For a three-year-old electric car in 2026, a "good" State of Health (SoH) is typically between 94% and 97%.

Recent UK studies of over 8,000 vehicles show that the median battery health for cars of this age is remarkably high, often staying above 95%.

Any car with a certificate showing 90% or higher is considered to be in excellent condition and will perform almost exactly like a brand-new model.

Is a used Tesla Model 3 cheaper than a BMW 3 Series in 2026?

While the "sticker price" to lease them may be similar, a used Tesla Model 3 is significantly cheaper to run than a diesel or petrol BMW 3 Series.

In 2026, Tesla benefits from a 4% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rate for business users, compared to up to 37% for the BMW.

When you add in the fact that home charging costs roughly 3p per mile - versus 14p per mile for diesel - the Tesla can save the average driver over £300 per month in total running costs.

How much road tax do I pay on a used electric car in 2026?

As of April 2026, the rules for road tax (VED) have changed. Most used electric cars registered after April 2017 now pay a standard flat rate of £200 per year, which is the same as petrol and diesel cars.

However, there is good news for premium EV buyers: the "Luxury Car Tax" threshold was raised to £50,000 for electric vehicles in 2026.

This means if your used EV originally cost less than £50,000 when new, you avoid the extra £440 yearly supplement that many high-end petrol cars still have to pay.

Can I get a salary sacrifice deal on a second-hand electric car?

Yes, you can. In 2026, "Used Salary Sacrifice" has become one of the most popular ways to drive an EV. Because the lease is paid from your gross salary (before tax), you can save between 30% and 42% on the monthly cost.

Combining the lower price of a second-hand car with these tax savings often makes it possible to lease a high-quality used EV, like a Hyundai Ioniq 5, for a lower monthly cost than a small petrol hatchback.

How many miles does a used Kia Niro battery lose per year?

Batteries in cars like the Kia Niro EV are very robust. On average, you can expect a range loss of roughly 1.8% to 2% per year, which equates to about 4 or 5 miles of "real world" range. For a Kia Niro with a 230-mile range, after three years of normal use, you would likely still have over 215 miles of range available.

Most Niro batteries are also protected by a 7-year or 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty for extra peace of mind.

So, Is a Used EV Lease Right for You?

As you can see, if you want to reduce your carbon footprint and your monthly outgoings, a used electric lease is the best solution in 2026.

You get a modern, tech-filled vehicle with a lower price tag and the peace of mind that comes with a Fleetsauce-approved inspection.

With the UK's charging network now exceeding 118,000 public points (a 35% increase from two years ago), range anxiety is also a thing of the past as well.

So, explore our latest used electric lease deals above today and join the thousands of UK drivers making the switch to cleaner, cheaper motoring.
