Starting in 2027, Electric Vehicles Require "Battery Passports” in the EU

(Posted on 24/01/24)

Starting February 1, 2027, a significant development will take place in the European Union as electric vehicles will be mandated to have battery passports, a move aimed at enhancing transparency regarding information related to their batteries and ensuring compliance with the Battery Regulation Amendment. This requirement applies specifically to batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh.

Each electric vehicle's battery will be assigned a unique passport, which takes the form of a QR code. The introduction of these passports aligns with the broader goal of fostering transparency and accountability within the electric vehicle industry. The QR code will need to be put on the battery, either by engraving or printing, to show what product it is.

These passports, featuring a QR code, not only facilitate regulatory compliance checks but also provide consumers with a sense of assurance regarding the safety and compliance of the purchased battery. Knowing that the battery has met regulatory standards and is deemed safe is a significant reassurance for consumers, adding an extra layer of confidence to their electric vehicle ownership experience.

The cost associated with obtaining these battery passports is expected to be capped at a reasonable £11, making them accessible and feasible for both manufacturers and consumers. The primary purpose of these passports is to offer a comprehensive understanding and assurance regarding the battery's history and journey, marking a significant stride towards a more transparent and accountable future for the electric vehicle industry.

The passports will serve as dynamic records, capturing and updating crucial information such as performance statistics and durability indicators over the battery's entire lifespan. This feature ensures that relevant parties involved in repairs can maintain an accurate and up-to-date account of the battery's condition, contributing to the overall efficiency and sustainability of electric vehicle technology.
