Learn about the importance of EV Day and hear from one of our Directors at Fleetsauce on how the EV industry has evolved over the past 5 years.

Happy Electric Vehicle Day! Today marks the fifth anniversary of World EV Day—a momentous occasion that celebrates the incredible impact of electric vehicles on our world. This day is all about acknowledging how EVs are driving us toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. By cutting down on pollution and tackling climate change with zero-emission technology, electric vehicles are truly making a difference. Join us as we shine a spotlight on the exciting advancements in EVs and their role in creating a better planet for us all.

Switching from combustion engines to electric vehicles is a significant step in reducing our carbon footprint. By lowering air pollution and promoting a cleaner, greener planet, electric vehicles play a crucial role in our fight against climate change.

In recent years, we've witnessed remarkable growth and transformation in the EV industry. The advancements have been impressive, with a wealth of options now available for electric vehicles. For instance, models like the Polestar 3 offer an impressive range of just over 400 miles on a single charge. Not only has battery life improved, but performance has too—today's electric vehicles are faster, more reliable, and packed with advanced technology.

Moreover, the expansion of charging infrastructure has been a game-changer. With more fast-charging stations being installed and networks growing rapidly, recharging an electric vehicle has become more convenient and accessible. This enhanced infrastructure supports longer trips and everyday use, making the transition to electric vehicles smoother and more practical than ever before.

Ev Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the incredible progress we've made in adopting electric vehicles and moving toward a more sustainable planet. It's exciting to see how far the EV industry has come and to imagine the advancements that lie ahead.

Charging Infrastructure

When we look at the charging infrastructure in the UK, it’s clear that significant improvements have been made year after year. The growth in public charging facilities has made EVs increasingly accessible to a broader audience. For example, recent government grants are supporting the installation of EV chargers for those living in flats or with on-street parking, making it easier and more affordable for more people to switch to electric vehicles.

Additionally, there are promising developments in on-street charging solutions. Trials conducted by companies like Kerbo are introducing innovative designs that could revolutionise how we approach charging in urban areas. If local councils become more involved and adopt these new technologies, we could see a substantial increase in the number of electric vehicles on the road, further accelerating the transition to a more sustainable future.

Now, with the introduction of rapid and ultra-rapid charging points, recharging your vehicle has become much quicker and more convenient. Depending on your vehicle's compatibility with the charger, the charging rate it can handle, and the size of your battery, you can expect a typical charging session to take around 30 minutes.

While charging an EV can still take longer compared to a quick visit to a petrol station, it’s important to note how significantly the time required has already been reduced. For instance, companies like NIO are pioneering battery swapping stations, where replacing a car’s battery takes less than 5 minutes. This innovation promises to cut charging time even further in the coming years, making electric vehicle ownership increasingly efficient and user-friendly.

As of the end of August 2024, the UK has 67,273 electric vehicle charging points spread across 35,230 locations. This represents a substantial 41% increase from August 2023, when there were 19,823 charging devices. According to data from Zapmap, this growth in public charging infrastructure indicates that the UK is making significant strides in supporting electric vehicle adoption and improving accessibility for EV owners.

Vehicle Range Improvement

Back in 2019, the longest range for an electric vehicle was the Tesla Model S, which could travel up to 370 miles on a single charge. The Tesla Model 3 was close behind, but many other models had ranges in the high two hundreds. Today, the EV market has evolved significantly. It's now much easier to find electric vehicles with ranges of 300 miles or more, and some models, like the Mercedes EQS, offer impressive ranges of up to 452 miles.

With these advancements, range anxiety is becoming less of a concern for many drivers. The combination of extended vehicle ranges and improved public charging infrastructure means you're never too far from a charging station, making long journeys and daily use more convenient than ever.

At the start of 2024, the UK government introduced the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, requiring car manufacturers to ensure that an increasing percentage of their new car sales are zero-emission vehicles. This mandate is a key part of the larger plan to phase out diesel and petrol cars by 2035, helping the UK achieve its goal of becoming net zero.

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is steadily growing. As of July 2024, there are just under 1.2 million electric cars on UK roads, a clear sign of progress. There is now a vast selection of EVs available, with manufacturers competing to offer diverse options—whether it's family-friendly models, high-performance vehicles for those seeking speed and excitement, or compact, reliable EVs perfect for city driving. The EV market is more dynamic than ever, making it easier for consumers to find the perfect electric car to suit their needs.
